Frequently Asked Questions

What are common signs and symptoms of gum/periodontal disease?

The most common visible signs of periodontal disease are bleeding and swollen gums, loose or separating teeth, persistent bad breath or pus discharge from your gums. One of the most interesting facts about gum disease is that it is seldom accompanied by pain.

How often do I need to get a tooth clean up done?

Ideally, a tooth cleaning should ideally be done every 6-8months it helps identify oral health issues at an early stage, therefore preventing more severe problems.

When I smile my teeth display excessive gums / I have a gummy smile? Can anything be done about that?

If teeth appear short or you have a “gummy smile”, reducing the height of your gingiva can help your teeth look more appealing. At Pradhan Dental Centre, we offer Laser assisted gum contouring/crown lengthening treatment using lasers. which have the advantage of precision, faster healing, minimal discomfort and superior aesthetics. The treatment can be completed in just one day with almost no post-operative discomfort.

I have dark gums. Can I do something to lighten my gums?

Yes, dark /pigmented gums can be lightened by a procedure known as depigmentation. It is done using lasers in a single visit. This is an advanced new technique in which the laser is used to remove a surface layer of the gums which has maximum amount of melanin, (the pigment responsible for the dark color). The result is pink and aesthetically appealing gums.

The procedure takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the colour and size of the dark patch on the gums. The procedure is done under a local anesthetic to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

What is a gum grafting procedure?

Gum grafting procedure (or perio plastic surgery), is a dental procedure aimed at restoring lost gums. It is normally done to treat gum recession, bone loss, tooth hypersensitivity and selective aesthetic concerns.
